Colour blindness is the decreased ability of distinguishing certain colours, under normal lighting conditions. It affects approximately 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women in the world. It is a very common issue among people and millions of colour blindness cases are reported every year.
So how is this colour blindness occurring,
Color Blindness causes are various. Many colour vision problems are inherited and are present at birth. People usually have three types of cone cells in the eyes. Each type senses either green, blue or red light. You see colour when your cone cells sense different amounts of these three basic colours. Inherited colour blindness happens when you do not have one of these three types of cone cells or they do not work properly. You may not see one of these three colours, or you may see a different shade of that color or a different colour. The most common form is red/green colour blindness.
The symptoms of this could be the following,
- You may be able to see some colours but not others. For example, you may not be able to distinguish red and green colour objects.
- You may be able to see only a fewer colours of shades, while others can see too many colours.
- In very rare cases, some individuals see only white, black, and gray.
While looking at this issue, we came across this cool Android app ‘Niram‘ that could serve as a very useful tool for the people suffering from colour blindness. The app uses device’s camera to capture the object which’s colour is to be identified. The app allows the user to tap on the region of the object to identify the colour in that region.
The app provides an option to save the colour and access it later. It also provides the name of the colour, hex-code of the colour, RGB(Red, Green, Blue) and CMYK(Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) value of the colour’s composition. There are options to copy the Name and hex-code to the phone’s clipboard and also share the same.
So if you got colour blindness or some of your friends have, go ahead and check out this app(the link is attached in the bottom). Niram can be used by web designers for managing colours and identifying hex-codes of colours easily.
